DIY Play Dough

My Toddler loves Play dough. Mostly she loves to eat play dough. Granted the package does say for ages 3 and up, and she has been playing with the stuff since she was a year and a half.  I guess her constant need to eat the play dough is understandable.  We do spend half our time making fake food to feed her cookie monster. It’s only fair that she ask why she can’t eat it. Thankfully Daniel Tiger taught us about pretending.

I’m pretty cheap, and hate waste. Those two things had me on a quest to find the perfect play dough recipe.  This recipe yields at least 4 small containers of play dough. It also only takes 15 minutes to make two batches. Time is money kids.

Ingredients

2 cups UNBLEACHED flour

1/2 cup  cheap salt

2 tablespoons cream of tartar

2 tablespoons  oil. (not canola that shit is toxic)

1.5 cups Boiling water

food coloring ( The only thing it’s good for)

Then What?

Get your water on the stove top so it can boil

Mix all your dry ingredients together in a stand mixer

Add your oil while your mixer is on low speed

By this time your water should be boiling.

Add as many drops of food coloring as your heart desires into the boiling water

Add colored water to the mixer and watch it turn into play dough

Let it cool before you play, and store it in a ziplock bag for longevity, and easier storage

*what I’ve learned. If you don’t let the water boil the salt will not dissolve, and you end up with exfoliating play dough.
