I know Spring just got here for us East Coasters, but as I sit on my back porch apricating, baby monitor by my side I feel inspired to share some easy, entertaining summer reads.
Gillian Flynn: Gillian Flynn is the kind of author who gives me story envy . She is hands down my favorite thriller writer of all time. Every one of her stories, not just “Gone Girl” are AMAZING.
She has a few novels she wrote before Gone Girl. “Sharp Objects”, and “Dark Places.”
I listen to audio books regularly. I love to read, but don’t always have the time to devote to a session of reading, and to be honest every time my old lady in training ass lays down in the dark with my kindle in hand I fall asleep mid-sentence. Audio books are part of my multi-tasking self-care philosophy. I was listening to the end of Sharp Objects on a walk one day, and when the book ended I literally stood mid road with my mouth wide open for five minutes. I almost took a seat on the curb to process what the f**k just happened.

That book was a bad lifetime movie. You know what happens ten minutes in and keep reading it even though you don’t want to anymore! It is like listening to DMX radio and Fetty Wap plays. Just because it is the same genre does not mean it is the same quality.

Her stories are interesting page-turners perfect for a sun filled beach day. She will not disappoint you. My other favorite titles from her are “What Alice Forgot” and “Big Little Lies.”
Did you Ever Have a Family, byBill Clegg: I finished this book in two days, which is saying a lot when you are a mother of four. Amazing, exceptional, haunting. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to cry. This book made me resentful of parenting. I wanted to do nothing else but get lost in it.
Still Alice by Lisa Genova: Yes, they made it a movie, but the book is better. This book will make you cry, laugh and thank the Sweet Lord baby Jesus for your life.
A Spool of Blue Thread, by Anne Tyler:This book is magnificent. A beautiful tale of family and all its idiosyncrasies. I did not want this one to end.
As Husbands Go, by Susan Isaacs: This story is witty, action packed and well written. It leans toward a murder mystery but is never short on the drama.
Our Souls at Night, by Kent Haruf: I loved this story about second chances, but it was one of those stories I would watch with my husband and he would say nothing happens. This novel has great character development, but nothing blows up.
Station Eleven, by Emily St. John: If you want to read at least one book with depth this Summer choose “Station Eleven.” An Apocalyptic novel with striking character weaving. This was my favorite audio book of the year thus far. It got me out on two walks a day and was in the background of all my cooking and cleaning sessions.
